Custom Kitchen Cabinets in Worcester & Boston, MA
Cabinets take up most of a kitchen budget and almost all of its storage. In Boston’s older houses — where no wall is straight and no ceiling is the same height from one end to the other — custom or semi-custom cabinetry is often what lets the kitchen use every inch instead of losing it to filler strips.
We design the cabinet layout, order from shops we trust, and install with scribed fillers and panels so the boxes meet the walls cleanly.

Stock, Semi-Custom or Custom?
Stock cabinets come in 3-inch steps and a handful of finishes. They work in a simple condo kitchen with square walls. Semi-custom lines offer more sizes, depths and finishes, and suit most Boston remodels. Fully custom cabinets are built to the inch, which matters in rowhouses and old Colonials where a 1/2-inch error in a wall leaves a visible gap.
We will tell you which level your kitchen actually needs. Spending on custom boxes for a straightforward galley is money better put into stone or appliances.
- Stock: fastest and least expensive, limited sizes
- Semi-custom: more sizes, finishes and interior options — the most common choice
- Custom: built to exact dimensions, any finish, inset doors, furniture details

Details That Matter in an Old House
Tall upper cabinets look best when they meet the ceiling, but Boston ceilings are rarely level. We set the cabinets level and scribe the crown molding to the ceiling, so the line looks straight even when the plaster isn’t.
- Full-height uppers or stacked uppers with glass on top
- Scribed end panels where cabinets meet an uneven plaster wall
- Plywood boxes and dovetailed drawer boxes on full-extension soft-close slides
- Pull-outs for trash, recycling and sheet pans that make a small kitchen work harder
- Panel-ready dishwasher and refrigerator fronts for a cleaner run
How Much Do Custom Kitchen Cabinets Cost in Boston?
Cabinet pricing depends on three things: how many linear feet you need, the construction level (stock, semi-custom or custom) and the door style and finish. For a typical 10x12 Boston kitchen with about 25 linear feet of cabinets, semi-custom painted Shaker runs roughly $10,000–$20,000 installed; fully custom Shaker $18,000–$32,000; and custom inset $26,000–$49,000 or more.
Interior fittings add up quickly: drawer organizers, pull-out trash, spice pull-outs, lift-up doors and corner systems can each add several hundred dollars. We include the ones you will actually use and skip the rest.

Cabinet Construction Explained
Two cabinets that look the same in a showroom can be built very differently. These are the details we check before recommending a line:
- Box material — 1/2- or 3/4-inch plywood rather than particleboard, especially under sinks
- Drawer boxes — solid wood with dovetail joints, not stapled particleboard
- Slides and hinges — full-extension, soft-close slides rated for heavy loads; adjustable soft-close hinges
- Finish — factory-applied catalyzed paint or conversion varnish, which resists chipping far better than site-applied paint
- Face frame vs. frameless — face-frame cabinets suit traditional and inset styles; frameless gives slightly more interior space and suits modern kitchens
Designing Cabinets for Small Boston Kitchens
In a condo or triple-decker kitchen, the cabinet layout matters more than the cabinet style. Taking uppers to the ceiling adds a full shelf of storage. Deep drawers instead of base doors make pots and dishes reachable. A 9- or 12-inch pull-out beside the range holds oils and spices; a tall pantry with roll-out shelves can replace a closet. We design small kitchens with drawers wherever possible, because every item in a drawer is visible and reachable.

Lead Times and Ordering
Semi-custom cabinets usually take 4–8 weeks from order; custom and inset cabinets 6–12 weeks, sometimes more around the holidays. We order once you approve the final drawings and schedule demolition so the cabinets arrive before the old kitchen comes out. We inspect every box on delivery, and damaged pieces are reordered before installation day.
Cabinet Styles That Suit Boston’s Architecture
The right cabinet style depends on the house as much as on taste. In a Back Bay brownstone or a Brookline Victorian, beaded inset cabinets with a painted finish and furniture-style legs on the island echo the original millwork. In a Somerville or Dorchester triple-decker, a simple Shaker door in a durable factory finish works with the plain trim those houses were built with. In Lexington’s mid-century moderns, flat slab doors in walnut or white oak respect the architecture, while in the post-war Capes and Colonials of Needham, Quincy and Braintree almost any style works, and the choice comes down to how traditional or modern you want the room to feel.
Color follows the same logic. Light colors make small, north-facing city kitchens feel larger; deeper greens, blues and natural wood suit bigger rooms with good daylight. We bring large door samples to your house so you see the color in your own light, which in a Boston winter can be very different from a showroom.
Hardware is the last layer. Unlacquered brass develops a patina that suits older houses; matte black and stainless suit modern kitchens; polished nickel sits in between. We help you choose a consistent finish across pulls, faucet and lighting, or a deliberate mix of two metals.
