Kitchen Cost?
Answer 4 quick questions and get an instant price range for a kitchen remodel in Boston or a nearby town.
How the Calculator Works
The calculator combines three answers — kitchen size, scope and countertop — into a price range based on typical Greater Boston projects in 2026. It starts with a base range for the size of the kitchen, adjusts it for the scope of work and then for the countertop material. The result is a realistic range rather than a single number, because two kitchens of the same size can differ by tens of thousands of dollars depending on what is behind the walls.
Kitchen Size
- Small (under 150 sq ft): condo galleys, triple-decker kitchens, rowhouse kitchens and many Capes
- Medium (150–250 sq ft): most single-family homes in Central MA and Greater Boston
- Large (over 250 sq ft): open-plan kitchens with islands, often after a wall has been removed
Scope of Work
- Cabinet refacing: new doors, drawer fronts and veneer on existing boxes; layout unchanged
- Cabinets and counters: new cabinet boxes and countertops in the existing layout
- Full remodel: new layout, wiring and plumbing updates, cabinets, counters and flooring, with permits
- High-end remodel: custom or inset cabinetry, stone slabs, structural changes and premium appliances
Countertop Material
| Material | Installed Price per Sq Ft | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate / butcher block | $15–$40 | Budget option, best for rentals |
| Quartz | $45–$90 | Most chosen; no sealing |
| Granite | $40–$80 | Heat-tolerant natural stone |
| Quartzite / marble | $65–$140 | Dramatic veining; sealing required |
What the Range Doesn’t Include
The calculator doesn’t know your house. It can’t see knob-and-tube wiring, a failed cast-iron drain, a sagging floor, lead paint, condo association requirements or a bearing wall you want removed. Those are exactly the items that make Boston projects vary, which is why we confirm every price with an in-home visit. Appliances are also excluded unless you choose the high-end scope, because many clients keep theirs or buy them separately.
Typical Results
| Example | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Small condo kitchen, cabinets and quartz | $9K–$20K |
| Medium kitchen, full remodel, quartz | $20K–$48K |
| Large kitchen, high-end remodel, quartzite | $42K–$110K |

From Estimate to Written Price
After the calculator, the next step is a visit. We measure, look at the structure and systems, and send a line-item estimate with layout options. Most clients find the written price within the calculator’s range; when it differs, the estimate shows exactly why.
The Factors That Move Your Price
The calculator uses three inputs, but a real kitchen price depends on more. These are the factors that move a Greater Boston kitchen estimate up or down, roughly in order of impact.
1. Layout Changes
Keeping the sink, range and walls where they are is the single biggest saving. Moving the sink a few feet along the same wall adds modest plumbing cost; moving it to an island can add $1,200–$3,500; removing a bearing wall adds $4,600–$18,000 including engineering and permits.
2. Cabinet Grade
Cabinets are a third of the budget, so the jump from semi-custom to custom — or from custom Shaker to inset — changes the total more than any other selection. Interior fittings such as drawer organizers and pull-outs add up as well.
3. Condition of the House
Old wiring, failed drains, sagging floors and lead paint are common in Boston’s pre-war housing. Each adds cost, and together they can add $2,900–$12,000 to an older home compared with a newer one.
4. Countertops and Backsplash
Moving from entry-level quartz to quartzite or marble can double the countertop line. A full-height slab backsplash behind the range adds more.
5. Appliances and Ventilation
A professional range or paneled refrigerator costs several times a standard package, and larger hoods may need make-up air. Ducting a hood outside in a condo can be simple or impossible depending on the building.
6. Access and Building Rules
Condo buildings, narrow streets, dumpster permits, elevator reservations and quiet hours add time and therefore cost. A third-floor walk-up adds labor to every delivery.
How to Lower Your Estimate
- Keep plumbing on the same wall
- Choose semi-custom cabinets with plywood boxes over fully custom
- Use quartz on the perimeter and save a premium slab for the island
- Reface sound cabinets instead of replacing them
- Keep appliances that fit the new layout
- Make selections early so nothing is rushed or reordered
Calculator Range vs. Written Estimate: An Example
Say you choose a medium kitchen, a full remodel and quartz. The calculator shows roughly $20,000–$48,000. During the visit we find a 1960s Cape in Quincy with a full basement, a 100-amp panel, galvanized supply lines and a doorway that can close to gain a cabinet wall. The estimate includes a panel upgrade and new supply lines but no structural work, and lands in the lower half of the range. A similar kitchen in a Cambridge condo with a shared stack, no basement access and association requirements would land in the upper half. The calculator gives you the band; the visit tells you where in it you fall.
One more tip: write down the range you see and bring it to the visit. It is a useful anchor for the conversation about which features matter most, which can wait, and which upgrades are worth their cost in your particular kitchen. Many clients find that a few targeted changes — closing a doorway, adding a pantry, upgrading lighting — deliver more day-to-day benefit than the most expensive finishes.
How to Measure Your Kitchen for the Calculator
You don’t need exact numbers, but a quick measurement helps you choose the right size. Measure the length and width of the room wall to wall and multiply. A 10 x 12 foot kitchen is 120 square feet — small in our calculator. A 13 x 16 kitchen is 208 square feet — medium. If you plan to remove a wall and combine the kitchen with a dining area, measure the combined space; it will usually fall in the large category.
Linear feet of cabinets matter too. Measure along the walls where cabinets will go. A small galley might have 15–20 linear feet of base cabinets; a typical single-family kitchen 25–30; a large open kitchen with an island 35 or more. Cabinet costs scale with these numbers.

After You Get Your Range
A range is the start of the conversation. The useful next questions are: what would push my kitchen toward the top or bottom of this band? Which items can be phased? What would a same-layout version cost compared with a new layout? During the visit we answer those for your house specifically, and the written estimate shows each option so you can decide where to spend.
